Chairmans Introduction

Hello,

My name is George Northall and I was a founder member of Swanton Morley Cricket Club when it was re-formed in 1983, after a lapse of about 20 years. Although I played for the club and helped with various activities occasionally, it wasn’t until 1991 that I really became very involved, after being elected Chairman and also Captain of the Sunday Friendlies side, a role which I particularly enjoyed. Having been Chairman now for nearly 18 years the Club has become an integral part of my life, especially since I retired from the Royal Air Force in 1996 and could then devote much more time and energy to every aspect of running a village cricket club. I am also happy to spend a lot of time at the cricket field doing general and more specialised ground maintenance work and also a range of practical tasks from painting and joinery work to repairing nets!

Swanton Morley is in the heart of Norfolk, three miles from the market town of Dereham. We play teams from all across the county and many of the grounds are very attractive. Over the years we have also hosted various touring sides who have always been very complimentary and wished to return again and again.

The Club has a particular focus on youth cricket and to this end we are both “clubmark” accredited and also a “focus club”. I am a qualified coach and special cricket training sessions are held for youngsters throughout the summer.

I am also the club development officer and our current major project is to replace the present inadequate pavilion with a log cabin type structure which will include showers and also have toilets for the disabled. This is an expensive task which will cost in the region of £100.000 so at this present time we are busy applying to various funding bodies.

We offer excellent facilities here at the Angel Cricket Ground, with two practice areas, sightscreens, mobile wicket covers and a square with ten pitches and, almost as important, we have a pleasant tea pavilion! New players of all ages and abilities are welcomed and we look forward to meeting you soon.

Let’s keep village cricket alive – come and join us!

Aims of the Club

To play good cricket with good humour and good grace in the hope that, whatever the result, both teams will go home happy.

To create an atmosphere in which players are valued for themselves and not just their cricketing abilities.

To make every effort to secure a satisfactory level of involvement in the game for all those representing the club.
