SMCC Chairman 2010 / George Northall George Northall / Chairman SMCC

After far too long a winter and now, at last, reveling in warm spring sunshine, I am delighted to welcome you to SMCC website, just entering into its second year. I know it will be of interest, not only to players of the game but also to the wider public, who may have been unaware of the facilities on offer at the Angel Cricket Ground – a hidden gem within our midst!

We are, again, indebted to Wayne McKinney for his innovative ideas, ensuring that the site appeals to all ages, and his encouragement to all members to make contributions, according to their particular skills, interests or sense of humour.

The Club is now into its 27th year and, on the brink of another promising new season, we wish our three adult teams continued success in their endeavours. Under the captaincy of Nathan Raines, the first team retained its position in WNCL Division 1, while the A side, led by Peter Ellis, was promoted to Division 3. Jonny Bidewell captained the MNSCL side and it was promoted to Division 2. Clearly, continued hard work and commitment are needed to maintain or surpass those notable achievements.

Our future prospects and sustainability, however, lie very much in our strong youth element, which continues to thrive, gradually providing a core of players to move up into the adult sides. In addition to our cricket training sessions on Monday evenings, we are liaising with local primary and secondary schools and also trying to promote girls’ cricket, as we did last year.

Attempts to obtain grants to replace the old pavilion are disappointing, since funds everywhere seem to be drying up but, we keep persisting with the applications, convinced that, one of these days, “something will turn up”, to quote a certain Dickens character.

So, we go forward with hope and confidence, believing that anything is possible, there is everything to play for and, maybe the best is yet to come!

SMCC First XI Captain 2010 / Jonathan Bidewell
West Norfolk League / Division 1st Norfolk Div

This will be my forth year playing cricket at Swanton Morley, and after a successful first year as captain of our Sunday side last year I am taking over running the first team from Nathan Raines.  This will be a tough act to follow, as the club under Nathan’s captaincy has been promoted through the divisions of the WNCL over the last few years.

This will be our third year in division 1 and after two solid mid table finishes I hope we can be pushing the top sides this year with a view to getting promoted into the Alliance, which is where I believe this club belongs.

We are hoping to regain much of our team from last year as well as plucking some of our promising younger players from Mr Lake!! We have also seen a few new faces join the club, which bodes well, and we are always keen to welcome new members into the club.

Jonny

SMCC Second XI Captain 2010 / Arthur Lake
West Norfolk League / Division 3

I first played for Swanton Morley about seven years ago when I was asked to help out one Saturday afternoon as they were a player short. Having played cricket with George at Billingford in the late 1970’s I did not hesitate to take  the opportunity to reacquaint myself with him (and Rosemary) on the sports field. However, I seem to have been “helping out” almost every Saturday since.

After three successive promotions with the Saturday side between 2005 and 2007 my predecessor, Peter Ellis and I volunteered to step down and run a second team in 2008. We won division five of the west Norfolk league in our first year and finished runners up in division four in 2009. This year we find ourselves in division three.

I have three personal ambitions for 2010

1. To do half as good a job as my predecessor
2. To ensure that tractor boy does not win ALL the batting trophies again
3. To beat Necton

Seriously, I want to maintain the mixture of youth and experience in the side which leads to a good team spirit, commitment and enthusiasm. I am hoping that the majority of last year’s second team will rejoin and be available for Saturday league games although I am aware I may lose some to the first team in which case it will be an opportunity to blood one or two more of the younger lads. The second team will then have served its purpose to bring players through to become members of the senior side.

Here’s looking forward to the 2010 season.

Arthur

SMCC Sunday XI / Captain 2010 / Nick Richer
Derek Cousins / Division 2

My Name is Nick Richer and this is my 16th Season with Swanton Morley Cricket Club. It is a great privilege to Captain the Sunday Team following on from an excellent season last year. I am really looking forward to this Season as we will be playing in Division 2 of the Mid Norfolk Sunday League, the highest level we have played at. We are looking forward to playing against some familiar faces as well as some new ones. We will have a good mixture of youth and experience this year and I am especially looking forward to seeing the younger players step up to the mark. I don't expect us to be immediate relegation candidates and am sure we can hold our own in this league.
